A great alternative to the more expensive infrared headphones, the Power Acoustik Wireless Infrared Headphones are a simple solution to your audio needs. These TV headphones do not come with a transmitter and must be used with a compatible infrared transmitter. They are very lightweight, which is great if you are purchasing them for kids. The audio quality isn’t as sharp as the top infrared headphones we reviewed, but they still deliver decent audio.

We were pleased that these infrared headphones come with an automatic shutdown feature that will automatically turn the headphones off once the infrared signal or audio is lost. They shut down within five minutes of losing the signal, and although that isn’t as quick as some of the other TV headphones we reviewed, it will still save you a lot of battery power in the long run. They also have a personal volume control on the headphones so each user can adjust the volume to a comfortable level.

As we mentioned above, the headphones do not come with a transmitter. They are compatible with most in-vehicle transmitters and are capable of receiving an infrared signal up to 30 feet. They are standard stereo headphones and lack the surround sound that some users prefer. The audio comes in clear when you are within the effective range, and we had no problems with the reception unless we left the 30-foot range or lost sight of the transmitter, thus losing the infrared signal.

Power Acoustik’s WLHP-100 infrared headphones are lightweight and comfortable to wear. There isn’t anything special about their design that makes them stand out – they are made of plastic, the band goes over your head and the ear pads lie on top of your ears. The head strap is adjustable to fit a child or an adult. Through our research we found them to be functional and comfortable for a variety of people.
One thing we disliked about the headphones is that they are designed specifically for in-vehicle entertainment systems but they don’t come with a carrying case. While a carrying case would probably make the cost slightly higher, we feel it would be beneficial for the added protection. None of the users we found had a problem with them being too flimsy or breaking; however, those who purchased the headphones for their children did say the case would be convenient for traveling.

Power Acoustik offers very little information on their website. We weren’t able to locate a product page specifically for the WLHP-100 infrared headphones; however, we were able to find a page for all of the wireless headphones. This page has information on six different pairs of wireless headphones and the main features of each. A little more in-depth information would be very helpful, especially regarding which transmitters are compatible with the headphones.

At the top of the site is a support link and a contact link for additional information on Power Acoustik products. We searched for an owner’s manual as well as additional information for the WLHP-100 infrared headphones and were unable to find any. Through the contact link we found a phone number and several email addresses for different departments: technical support, warranty and repairs, parts and sales. We sent an email to the technical support address listed and after nearly a month, still have not received a response. We also called the phone number, and after being transferred to the technical support department we left a message and did receive a phone call the same day. The representative was helpful and was willing to speak with us until all our inquiries were addressed. Although they aren’t as focused on customer support as we think they should be, they are willing to work with you. However, we recommend contacting them by phone if you actually want to receive a response.

Summary:

While these infrared headphones are not in the top five products, they are still among the top 10 best infrared headphones available. They don’t offer the greatest quality we found, but they provide a clear sound as long as you stay within the effective area. Their customer support team was average – they didn’t respond to our emails but returned our phone calls and addressed each of our questions. If you want higher quality, a larger effective area and wider effective degree, and a product that comes with its own transmitter, we suggest you look at some of the other products listed on our side-by-side comparison. But if you don't need an extra transmitter and if the specs of these Power Acoustik Wireless Infrared Headphones meet your needs, this might be a good inexpensive pair to look into.

They do not come with a transmitter and the ear pads cannot be replaced if ripped or torn.

The Verdict

Unless you have an adapter to use with these headphones, you are limited to in-vehicle entertainment only.
